Route 28 Scenic Byway Designation

Route_28_Scenic_Byway_PicRoute 28 is the primary artery serving the transportation needs of the Central Catskills and provides access to the “forever wild” Catskill Forest Preserve and the two major waterways – the Esopus Creek and the East Branch of the Delaware River. The corridor is also an important medium through which the region expresses itself to the travelling public – tourists, recreational enthusiasts, and residents alike. Unfortunately, the resources along and adjacent to the corridor are not properly promoted, and there is no adopted plan to manage the corridor’s scenic qualities. These problems need to be addressed through sound land-use planning; otherwise they will be a detriment to the area’s environmental and economic future. The opportunity for success is currently optimal because there is strong commitment from the Central Catskills Collaborative and a secured grant from the Catskill Watershed Corporation to support the development of a corridor management plan (CMP).
