Wanted: Watercraft Inspection Steward/Environmental Educator

Position Vacancy, 2018

Title: Watercraft Inspection Steward/Environmental Educator. Approximately 20 positions available. 

Program Mission: The Watercraft Inspection Program is a public education program whose goal is to prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species through voluntary watercraft inspections and educational outreach. 

Position Type: Summer seasonal appointment (May-September). Full time (40 hours/week). Work schedule is Thursday- Sunday, 10 hours/day. Weekends and holidays are mandatory. Mandatory multi-day training will be held in late May (20th-23rd). 

Position Locations: 

Lake Erie Region: Buffalo Harbor, Fort Niagara, Wilson Tuscarora 

Lake Ontario Region: Oak Orchard State Marine Park, Irondequoit Bay 

Eastern Lake Ontario: Fair Haven, Stony Creek, Mexico Point, Westcott Beach, Pine Grove, Chaumont Bay 

Thousand Islands Region: Wellesley Island, Grass Point, Keewaydin, Black Lake 

Lake Champlain Region: Point Au Roche State Park, Dickson Point, Great Chazy River 

Finger Lakes Region: Allan H. Treman, Dean’s Cove, Taughannock Falls, Cayuga Lake, Honeoye Lake, Canandaigua State Marine Park 

Saratoga-Capital Region: Saratoga Lake 

Stewards should be located within commuting distance of one of these areas. Transportation and housing will not be provided. Additional launch sites may be added. Each steward will be responsible for one or more launches and should have reliable transportation. 

Duties & Responsibilities: 

❖ Perform voluntary watercraft inspections; Educate patrons about aquatic invasive species & distribute literature and brochures. 

❖ Collect data about boat launch use, AIS spread prevention behaviors, and vectors for potential AIS spread. 

❖ Participate in invasive species removal projects with other Boat Stewards and regional “Strike Teams.” 

 

Qualifications: 

❖ Completed or pursuing a degree in natural resources, biology, environmental studies, recreation, or education. 

❖ Strong verbal communication skills and ability to interact with the public. 

❖ Capable of performing duties independently and sometimes in inclement weather. 

 

Compensation: The rate of pay is $13.04/hour. This position does not include health care benefits or paid leave.
