Catskills Geology Walk with Robert Titus

Take a walk through millions of years of Catskills history with geologist Robert Titus at Platte Clove Preserve.

Date: Sunday, November 8, 2026

Time: 1:00 PM–3:00 PM

Location: Platte Clove Preserve

Along the way, Robert will help participants read the landscape through its rocks and landforms, exploring the geologic forces that shaped the Catskills we know today. We’ll examine rock outcrops that reveal the story of the Devonian Catskill Delta, including ancient stream channels and floodplains, and learn how geologic joints offer evidence of the breakup of Pangea.

The walk will also uncover signs of the Ice Age, from glacial erratics to evidence of the powerful flows that once moved through Platte Clove. Participants will visit the stream below the Red Cabin, consider the landscape depicted in a historic Hubbard painting, and imagine how dramatically different the Clove would have looked during the Ice Age.

Join us for an afternoon of exploring Platte Clove while discovering the ancient stories written into the rocks beneath our feet!

There will be some walking on slippery surfaces, so please dress for the weather and wear sturdy footwear.

Advance registration is required, this is a free event with a suggested donation of $10.

Please Note: Pets are not permitted at Catskill Center programs and events with the exception of trained service animals assisting their handlers.
