Learn how to identify trees and shrubs even after their leaves have fallen during this guided walk with naturalist Chris Nilan, owner of Barkaboom Native Plants.
Date: Saturday, November 14, 2026
Time: 1:00 PM –2:00 PM
Location: Catskills Visitor Center, Mt. Tremper
Think you need leaves to identify a tree? Join naturalist Chris Nilan, owner of Barkaboom Native Plants, for an educational walk around the Catskills Visitor Center and discover the clues trees and shrubs leave behind once their leaves have fallen.
During this one-hour walk, Chris will introduce participants to winter tree and shrub identification using characteristics such as bark, branching patterns, buds, and other features. Along the way, we’ll identify species we encounter and learn more about their ecology and natural history in the Catskills.
Whether you’re looking to sharpen your tree identification skills or simply see the winter forest in a new way, this walk will give you some new tools for recognizing the plants around you year-round.
Please dress for the weather and wear sturdy footwear.
Advance registration is required, this is a free event with a suggested donation of $10.
