Function or Form: Utilitarian Art / an exhibit

The 2nd annual exhibit, Function or Form: Utilitarian Art, will be on display in the Erpf Gallery November 18, 2017 through January 6, 2018. It will feature beautiful functional items by 14 local artists.

An Artist’s Reception will be held on Friday, November 17, from 6-8 PM, at the Erpf Center in Arkville.

Many of the products we use every day are not only useful, but beautiful. Homemade furniture, clothing, pottery, quilts… so many items we depend on for everyday use could be on display for their beauty.

In 2016 the Catskill Center’s Erpf Gallery hosted the first Utilitarian show to celebrate local people that create art with both function and beautiful form.

The 2016 show was such a success – with a dozen sales and hundreds of visitors - that the Utilitarian Art show has become an annual event. This year’s show will feature some returning artists and several new artists.

2017 Exhibitors include:

Jessica Baker – window coverings
John Byer – woodwork
Enid Cytryn – clothing
Maureen DeKaser – floor coverings
Rosalind Dickinson – pottery
Tabitha Gilmore-Barnes – weaving
Janie Greenwald – seat weaver
Annie Hayes – hooked rugs
Richard Kirgan – furniture
Cheyenne Mallo – ceramics
Joe Muehl – wood work
Franc Palaia – furniture
Dan Palm – woodwork
John Virga - woodwork

Third Thursdays continues with round two of their “Lively Duos series” at the Catskill Center - June 15

On the front porch of Arkville’s “ark”, the Catskill Center will be hosting the second Thursday of their new series, Third Thursdays: a neighborly evening of potluck, music and getting-to-know-you.

Curated by Brit Hotaling, lively folk will be played by Munster Pickle and Two for the Show- courtesy of the Flying Song Garden.

All are invited to bring their favorite dish for sharing and picnicking. June’s gatherers supplied a full-tilt spread with offerings running the gambit from baked ziti to salads of local spring greens and birthday cake.

Linda Quinn, purveyor of the local establishment, Under the Nose, will be manning a table of homemade fudge and other wares. The Catskill Recreation Center will also be representing.

The Catskill Center invites all community members to join us for further Third Thursday events  - a new monthly evening of food, friends, and music at the Erpf Center Gallery in Arkville from 6:00- 9:00pm.

There will be a suggested donation of $10 to help the Catskill Center continue to provide events and programming.

May 20 Gallery Talk with Alan Powell

May 20th is your last chance to see Catskill 360. The amazing 360 degree photographs by Alan Powell. At 1pm, Alan will explain his photographic and video techniques. His presentation will be followed by a tour of the exhibit. This program is free and open to the public.

Alan Powell has worked in electronic arts and media for more than three decades. Starting with single-channel video, installations, artist books and other two-dimensional electronic art. A graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, Powell has been involved in artist collectives Electron Movers and Termite TV, integrating digital photography and new media, blending video and photographic practice.

“My visual experience goes beyond a single image. I scan, pan and sample my environment using the electronic tools related to video, sound, photography, and three-dimensional imaging. I rarely create an image based on one object/one moment in time, but arrange images and sounds in a montage or collage,” says Powell. The images step beyond the frame. After being captured with a variety of techniques and technologies, Powell constructs the images to knit the environment into a holistic map or to highlight the conceptual relationships between objects, places and people.

Powell’s work features images created from sites across the region, including the Catskill Center’s Platte Clove Preserve. Recent work has included images captured from around the world, including such famous sites as Walden Pond, Mount Greylock (Berkshires) and more isolated locations like Beqa Island, Fiji.

Catskill 360 will be on display April 1 - May 20 at the Catskill Center’s Erpf Gallery located at 43355 Route 28, Arkville, NY. The Erpf Gallery is open Monday - Friday from 9:30 am - 4:30 pm and Saturday’s 10 am - 2 pm. For more information visit catskillcenter.org/events or call 845.586.2611.
