Catskill Park Coalition & the "Catskills Package"

Last week the Catskill Center led Catskill Park Awareness Day, joined with more than two dozen organizations represented by just under 50 volunteers to meet 56 legislators representing the Catskill Park and/or who led committees in the Senate and Assembly that can influence spending in the Catskills. As we've done for nearly five years, we met with our legilsators to share our passion for the region and why we think the Catskills are so vitally important to the state. From representatives of major international organizations that are a part of the Coalition, to the small local chamber of commerce down to an informal hiking group, we represented a diversity of interests speaking with one voice.

Meet Lari

We’ve been talking a lot about hemlocks here at the Catskill Center this past year. They’re an iconic part of the Catskills, whether they are providing ideal trout stream habitat, stabilizing steep slopes, or just perfectly framing an aesthetic waterfall getaway. Unfortunately, hemlocks in the Catskills (and elsewhere along the East coast) have been struggling to overcome an attack by an invasive insect: the hemlock woolly adelgid.

The Catskill Center in 2016

In 2016 the Catskill Center Board of Directors and staff began a strategic visioning and planning process to look towards the Center's 50th anniversary in 2019 and our next 50 years of success. The process has been ongoing all year and will culminate with a strategic plan, to be released by the Catskill Center in early 2017 that will set out a clear mission, vision and direction for the Catskill Center to meet the challenges of our changing world.
